Lawn

Autumn leaves

Autumn foliage offers a valuable, protective mulch layer on bare soil. However, a layer of leaves on the lawn is not beneficial and should be removed. You can use the leaves underneath shrubs and herbaceous borders by means of so-called surface composting.

Snow mould in the lawn

In winter, snow mould causes damage to the lawn. Snow mould is wet rotting grass and its occurrence is promoted by grass being too long when entering into winter. To prevent the formation of snow mould, the grass should be mowed one last time at the end of November before frost appears.

Help prevent infestation with snow mould by giving the lawn potassium in the autumn. A potassium fertiliser increases the lawn’s resistance to drought, frost, diseases and pests.

Moss in the lawn

The lawn slows down its growth during the dark months of the year. However, moss continues to grow well even at lower temperatures and in poorer light conditions. One reason why grass does not grow well and is unable to free itself from moss is a soil that is too acidic. Grass needs to have a pH value of 6 to 7. Quickly and easily check the pH of the soil with a pH soil testing kit. In order to obtain an overall impression of the lawn area, the required soil sample should be a mixture of several individual samples. To take a soil sample, cut out and lift a triangular block using a knife. Then use a spoon to evenly scrape away and collect the soil from the sides – from top to bottom. If the soil is excessively acidic, adjust the pH value for a healthy lawn using lime.
